This movie has so much subtle humour, some jokes may be noticed only after fifth or tenth viewing. Let's post them here.
Here are some hidden jokes I can remember right now.
UFOs. I found only two ("Z is for Zurfing" and "Chicken Bob") but there are others I haven't found yet (and you?)
When Cody is talking about his job, we see a long shot of the fish sorting station. Look at the two penguins at the center of the shot - one of them is selling fish under the counter.
When Joe is saying "That's like three in a row!", he puts up only 2 fingers. Later he does the same when saying "So it's day three, yeah, I come across Penguans".
When Geek saw the cameraman for the first time, he threw a shell at him and smashed the light attached to the camera.
"Any other skills besides surfing?" - "Like singing and dancing?" - it's a reference to Happy Feet.
When Arnold is saying "Well, a winner is somebody who doesn't knock me off my surfboard", pay attention to his friend Kate. :-)
When Cody and Joe arrive in Pen Gu Island, some of the natives look at the crew with astonishment.

OMG Awesome topic!
Here are some that I can remember:
-When Tank is throwing rocks at the big z shrine, there are 3 penguins sitting looking up at him. When Cody comes up to Tank, their eyes stay fixed on him, but when Cody throws the rock at Tank's head, they turn their heads in unision and look right at Cody! (I thought this was clever)
-Cody is the only penguin of his colony to have a unique flower-like pattern on his chest (helping his character and setting him ever further apart from the rest of Shiverpool)
-Cody's last name is not only a reference to the Mavericks surf spot, but it also reflects his character of being an outcast and a nonconformitist(sp?) and one who does not belong to a particular group and thus acts independently (Hence my username)
-When Cody surfs in the moonlight in Shiverpool (My favorite scene) there's a shot of Cody walking down the hill while in the backround, there's a long line of penguins walking up. That shot alone made my eyes get misty the first time I saw Surf's Up in the theater (and it still does) There's also a shot of Cody's shilloute(sp?) casted in front of the moon in that same scene, and that shot also breaks my heart every time I see it.
These are the only ones I can think of now.

Agreed, this episode is soooooooo touching and beautiful! I also love the moment when Cody realizes that Geek is Big Z. So moving.  Here are some more subtle things I've remembered. Kelly Slater and Rob Machado really look like their prototypes. I didn't know about them and laughed so hard when saw this picture. ;D ;D ;D  Cody throws out his necklace, but later, when the competition begins, he appears again with it. I believe it's a mistake. When Cody won the first round, Lani squeezed her squid with joy. Look at the squid's eyes! ;D Right before the final round, when the announcer is saying "Tank, nine-time defending champion", Rob Machado is eating a squid and two Penguans near him are doing the "yum-yum' gesture. They were going to eat him instead of Joe.  After the surf-off with Cody, Tank tastes a squid and says "Tastes like sh......" When Cody's mom is being interviewed, a crowd of penguins gather behind her. It's so funny how they are trying to look into the window!  |

Yeah I noticed that, but right before the surf-off starts, when Reggie is branding Cody as the "wipeout king" and everyone stares at him (love this moment) there's a shot of lani, but look closely at her squid, because he rolls his eyes!

One more cool thing. In the old newspaper there is an Ode to Big Z that ends with lines:
"And so we build a shrine to you, The board shaped by your fin, Forever will it stand so tall Til you return again". That exactly happened!

Two more things I noticed: -When Cody looks back to decide to catch the tube or save Joe, he looks back in the same manner that he did when he looks back in Shiverpool to decide to stay or follow the whale. Screencap to prove it:  -When young Cody first gets the z-shell from Big Z, he stares in wonder at him and does a slow blink. Later, when Cody finds out that Geek is Big Z, he does the same stare and the same blink! Another screencap to prove it:  |

I'm trying to come up with more things on the spot...
-During the fire scene, it starts mostly with shots of all three characters together, but as the scene progresses, it has shots of the characters on their own, representing each character going their own way.(This was said in the Blu-Ray commentary)
-Aside from the Summer's Place theme that plays when Cody and Glen get their fish to eat, the only music played in Shiverpool is when Cody is surfing!
-How Cody has the middle seat on the Maverick's sofa(it shows how "trapped" he is!)
-When Cody goes down the pile to greet Mikey, he knocks over a nearby penguin and stops the "slide line of fish" beneath the pile! (I love this!)

In this scene, the little penguin is untieing the rope. That's why the surfer crashed!  -During the fire scene, it starts mostly with shots of all three characters together, but as the scene progresses, it has shots of the characters on their own, representing each character going their own way.(This was said in the Blu-Ray commentary) What is this scene? I need help. Oh, I meant the CAMPfire scene.(where Big Z reveals the truth about his failing 10 years eariler) Sorry for the misunderstanding. Also, I believe that the fire dims as the scene progresses, symbolizing Cody's dimming love for Big Z. |

Also, when Mikey first goes to Shiverpool, and tells Frezzy that he's sitting on thin ice, Mikey's beak dosen't move. The same thing happens when Cody drags Big Z out to the water right before the wave crashes over Big Z.

Sorry, I was rushing when I typed that...
Its when Cody drags Big Z out to the water on his board, right after cody throws the pineapple to big z, big z says: "You got to get up eariler in the morning for..." then the wave crashes down on him. It is when big z says this that his beak does not move.
