The Phenomenon of Surf's Up (Long)

Anyway, I've got kinda a weird topic today, and it is one that I take seriosly.
It's basically just about what Surf's Up has done to our lives, an how we continue to talk about it, discuss topics, and just basically how we keep it alive after more than a year since its original release.

Okay, Here we go

(This does get deep more you get into it and it does reflect my opinions and might not reflect yours, or the other people here, so sorry if I put all you guys here on the spot)

Okay, so, this whole topic started up with me and a friend that I go to school with, the one that did that awesome drawing of Cody (I posted it in FanArt). Anyway, we just started to talk about how movies and tv shows have effected us so deeply in our lives, and then we thought to Surf's Up...

Surf's Up has definitively effected me and how I look at animated movies, or just basically movies in general. It has affected the way I act, interact with people, my preferences in choice, etc. Surf's Up has also definitely made an impact in my friend too, I mean if I had asked him to draw me an emperor penguin holding a surf board, like in December of 2006, he'd definitively would have said "your out of your God D*mn mind!". But now you'll ask him to draw Cody and Glen as 'small eggs' in the cold Shiverpool snow in front of big piles of fish, he'll do it perfectly and without hesitation.

Without a doubt, Surf's Up will be remembered by us that are here, the people that care about it still. I mean, (I think) all of us here saw a preview, advertisement or something, anything to get you to know about this movie, and get some hype about it before it came out! I, as you should know, saw the trailer for Surf's Up from Apple Trailers in mid April of '07, making me pumped to go see it in June. My friend Saw the teaser trailer on the big screen when he saw Spider-Man 3, so he also got an early telling of this film. At that time, I had no idea what this has gotten us into, and how would I have known that almost 2 years later, I would be writing this whole page about how it would affect us for a long time to come .

Something about the film has allowed us to follow it for so long, to keep it alive long after the final end credits roll to a skippering halt for the last time, and all the animation, the effects, all concept drawings and art have now been deleted, lost, and forgotten by the people at Sony Pictures Animation and Imageworks, who are now working on something bigger than Surf's Up is, or will be. Most people have put this movie in the corner and will not come back to it because, to them, Surf's Up is not a 'classic' movie, but for many people, like us here, and others just like us somewhere else in the world, its just become a part of us, long to be with us, now, and never to be forgotten.

This is so cool!
Surf's Up has done a lot to my life, including make Cody my favorite animated outcast (see my FanFiction.net page in my sig) But you should see the What you learned from Surf's Up thread for what I think about the movie.

Surf's Up has affected me too. It has become a part of my mind. Almost every day I remember an episode from SU, or a song, or something else related to it. Well, why do I love it?
There was nothing particular in the story. There wasn't too many funny moments. But what I really love in this movie, and what makes it unique among all other animated films, is the way the story was told. The documentary style is so awesome. The directors have basically invented the genre of animated documentary with live camerawork and improvised dialogs. It's truly amazing!!!
I must also mention the fantastic 3D graphics. Every little gesture, every fine detail is well developed. I admire the animators and enjoy every second of their work. And, of course, I loooove the MUSIC!!!
This movie didn't receive attention it deserved. Hundreds of people worked hard on it for several years and received almost nothing. This is injustice and we can't redress it. Well, this is life and everything happens. Nevertheless, this movie means so much for me and for each of us, and it will never be forgotten. There aren't so much of us... but we are able to feel something different.

I guess i'll tell what I think about this awesome movie...

I've been a proud fan of Surf's Up ever since April of 2007, when I first heard about it. I was already a huge fan of Happy Feet(and I still am) and I thought this would be just as cool. It turned out I was right and I completly loved it, I even thought it was way better than Happy Feet(but Happy Feet is still cool) I loved everything about the movie, the story, the songs, the style, the characters, but most of all, the message. Now, most people think that the main message of Surf's Up was "winning isn't everything," but I say that the main moral is "Stay true to who you are."

Ever since I first laid eyes on him, I was in love with Cody Maverick. I loved his appearance, his story, his character, but most of all, I loved how much we had in common.(even though he's a boy and I'm a girl.) I feel a lot of sympathy for him because we've both gone through the same things in life.
In real life, I don't have many friends, and many people make fun of me, stare at me, or just make me feel uncomfortable, which is just the way Cody felt when he was growing up in Shiverpool. I also have dreams of becoming a cartoonist/animator someday, so I draw and doodle on everything. This often leads to both me and my drawings getting made fun of, just Cody's surfing was made fun of by his family and colony. But no matter what, I try to never give up, and find my own way(sound familiar?) no matter what anyone says. Someday I just might end up like Cody!

So Surf's Up has taught me many, many lessons about life, but most of all, it taught me that as long as you stay true to who you are, than you'll always be a true winner. When Cody followed his own path, he brought back Big Z, helped his friends, and made his dream come true. Simply put, Cody changed the entire surf world just by being himself! How cool is that?

I may favor other movies in the future, but Surf's Up will always be my favorite movie.

Just like Cody Maverick always says:"Cody's me bro, let me be me!"

So, Cody The Maverick, everybody can find something to love in SU, and, after reading your revelation, I must say one more thing. I thought of it before, and you have proved that I'm right.
Surf's Up isn't a movie just for fun. Even though it is a family-entertaining movie, it's something bigger than a plain comedy. It's quite a powerful film. It just needs a closer look. Its nomination for Oscar is not accidental because the members of the Academy can watch movies carefully. The movie has subtle messages that are not obvious to wide audience. You've caught a useful message, and it's so great.
